Hi Guys,

I was hoping to find out if anyones had any issues with the suction mount? I took mine out on Sunday but the camera came off on a pretty small wipeout (Suction cup failed to stick). My mate actually found the camera but it had filled with water and now seems to be broken. (Very lucky I know as the mount/ camera sinks!)

I was only in at Croyde so it wasn't a hard fall or a reef etc. The front of the board was also well prepped and it seemed solid on dry land.

I wasn't too sure if it had happened to anyone else and if so what they'd done/ contacted?

Any information would be great.

Cheers,

Ross

I havent used mine, am a bit nervous to; on their website it actually says do not use with surf or snowboards, which I'm pretty sure wasn't there before.

http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=17

I'm sure this does not appear elsewhere in selling sites? Is the camera repairable?

I would not use suction cups. I lost my original hero cam using a suction cup, £150 too the bottom of the sea. (How many times has your sat nav fallen off the windscreen) I have bought a new wide angle camera and mounted it to the front of the board using the 3M sticky mounts provided which seems to be still good after six sessions.

I am using Nickel Hydride Engerizer Rechargble batteries which continued to work for a full 2 hour session, recording using video. Standard batteries only last 5 minutes due to cold and power required by the camera. A good tip is try to keep your batteries warm, put them next to the heater in the car and don't leave them in teh car overnight.

The camera can be frustrating and can take several sessions before getting some decent results.

Be careful when putting in your SD card. The camera has a sometimes locks the card by sliding the switch on the side of the card when inserting the card

Well I'm trying to dry the camera out but I think it's screwed. i only bought the suction cup as it came with the surf hero and thought most people used it! I didn't want to put a hole in my board with the plug if possible.

Are the 3M sticky mounts recommended to hold? I think I'll end up sending the camera back and seeing what my options are. Only tried it 3 times!

Like the quote said on the GO Pro site -

"Perfect if you own a Helmet HERO, Surf HERO, or Wide HERO camera and want to add a suction cup mount to your arsenal"

I'll keep you posted with how it goes and maybe I was just unlucky!

I think the pic quality is pretty good. You can set it to shoot a photo every few seconds, so there is no real delay, and you do end up with some duff shots and some good ones.

Yeah they recommend an FCS style mounting for the surf one not the suction cup.

teagle the surfwideangle has no wrist strap and also the fitting it comes with will not fit to the wrist strap (which I kept when I send my first gopro back).

vica versa the normal surf cam has a wrist strap but will not mount on a board using the wideangle mount, although I think you can buy the casing seperately.

Obviously the lens and hence the base unit is a different shape between the two types.

I found when mounting it to a car or whatever some velcro does the job either direct to the car or to a sat nav suction mount.

i dont know anything about photography really but i'd guess it was to do with light fully saturating the ccd (i think thats the right word). Does it get worse over the day? at work we've ahd prolems with charge building up on the ccd over the day (on cameras that take automatic half hourly pictures) and requiring the power to be switched off for 15 minutes and then it works fine again.

Either that or your capturing the first signs of the apocalpse.

Can't see your pic, but mine does it too. IainF's explanation sounds right. Makes me think of The Police's King of Pain when I see it.

Yeah it only seems to happen with p&s cameras (I think) just too bright for the camera to handle was always my explanation.
Doesn't happen on my slr.

yeah you overload the ccd by pointing it at a bright light source, you can actually permanently damage the ccd by doing that, so most cameras have a safety feature where it just shuts that part off as soon as it reaches a level that could potentially overload it. more complex cameras probably have more sophisticated safety cutoffs/interpolate with surrounding areas etc. so dont just produce a black dot.
