Patching up fins

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

Patching up fins

Postby baggins » Thu Nov 22, 2012 12:52 pm

recently got myself a board with some glassed on fins... fins that taken a few knocks over the years.

I'm thinking over how I could patch up the fins. I'm a definate beginner when it comes to repairs but thought this may be a not too hard one to have a crack at.
suggestions/advice welcomed

please shout if you need any more info

You could put a few strands of glass roving over the chips to build them up, then some 4oz over the top to keep it secure.

Or you could reshape the fins

If you want some glass to give it ago i've got loads of scraps your welcome to

cheers Matt top guy

would it be a case of kind of putting the fibreglass pieces over the fin as it is then putting some resin on top
then sanding it down to finish to match the shape of the not chipped fin?

I'd just sand them to a smooth shape and judging by the photo you'd be losing virtually nothing of the fin.

Pretty much....although its probably easier to reshape them.

Give me a shout if you want some resin & glass to give it a go.

I wouldn't get too adventurous, just sand the rough areas down; it will barely affect performance.
