Oddballs, weirdos, and one offs....food for thought

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

hi rob, surfing needs people like that to think outside abit, once there are too many machines to do the shaping innovation will be lost ,everything will be a clone of each other, pete

Carl Ekstrom! Not heard that name for a while...

Nice looking board, not just a difference in the tail shape there as seen on other asym boards, looks like a bit of thought has gone into the fin placement etc too...

Kinda make sense when you think of it-the way you apply pressure with your heels is different to how it happens on your toe-side eh?

RK is the spitting image of Jake Phelps from Thrasher magazine! You think he skates too?

Is this thread for all weird stuff? There's a lot out there!

archy,

Yeah, just for weird stuff.... why not, right? I got loads of weird shit i need to get off my hard drive...lol

I actually have a Nelson/Ekstrom longboard from the 60s with a asymetrical tail, and reverse cut fin(by far my favourite board to ride, ever.)

there's 2 asymetrical boards of mine on this thread... viewtopic.php?f=13&t=11293&p=190653&hilit=cleaning+out+the+shed#p190653

He has been a real source of inspiration to think for yourself, and not be afraid to try something different. Not many people have heard of him, because he stopped making boards ages ago to focus on design work, but he's a genious. I would compare him to Wil Jobson, in that he isn't really concerned with the spotlight, just functional design. That board certainly has a lot of things going on. I wonder what it is made of....

RK is an animal...just wish he'd finish that damn movie already...dying to see it

hi rob, i am still not back in the water , i have been in paddeling just to keep up my paddle strength but don/t feel i could jump to my feet yet.

its gave me a bit of time to dream up some more weired stuff to make ,

i am making a greg griffin inspired 5 finner at the moment , cherry wood over an xtruded polystyrene core, i might put on some carbon covered rails as well , pete

Royal, can you help on this one?

In the '60s, there was a shaper that put little fluted sidecuts about the third up from the tail on a few noseriders-the intention being that water would flow over the deck in the tail, assisting noserides... can you remember who?

Me and Scoopet can remember the boards but not the shaper! I've got a strong feeling it was Hansen, but not 100%

Anyone else know???

Hmm.. not too sure if that's the thing....

They can only be described as 'anti Stingers', almost like turning a fluted rail channel back to front and putting it upside-down.

God, that's confusing... I'll have to have a dig about myself

On the subject of another weirdo, does anyone know much about Steve Pendarvis? I can find very little about him on the interweb...

Also, I posted this on the fishy thread, but it's definitely weird!

that board RK has is made by the Mirandon bros in La Jolla, and follows some of their experiments with snowboard style rail outlines. In TSJ where I 1st saw it, he was tearing it up....not saying much for RK though...

Steve Pendarvis does some crazy shit. Loads of flexible things going on, but yeah, hard to find much about him actually

this isn't new either, as in, has been in TSJ, SP and loads of other quality mags for maybe 3 years, but they are definately a new take on surfing.

i totally want to get involved with those longboards. Otherworldly....totally radical.

That quad looks insane...like really, why not have an asym nose?? I can sympathise with the need for asymetrical boards, as said before on here, you dont surf on your heels like you do on your toes...maybe its something tot hink about for my next board.... x

thought i would post this over from the other thread (http://magicseaweed.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=13320&p=224859#p224859)as it didnt get much discussion over there.

just realised i left that mag in Looe...so i forgot who shaped it. But the fin is shaped out of the same block fo foam as the board. and i dont know what the whole idea about the tail is.... but yeah. anyone know anything?

Mirky

That board is by John Kelly an old time surf pioneer based in Hawaii. Get a copy of Surfers Path July/August to read an extended obituary of him.
I thought I had that one.

Wow! How's the 'Tube Bullet'???! Imagine that puppy at 4ft Racetracks, streaking through sections...

There's something quite reassuring about a shaper saying 'Example: I've ridden them in Florida Beachbreaks and ten foot Pipeline' don't you think? I would order a board from him!

How's this little nugget of weirdness, too:

Yeah, agree with you there Mirky-how are some of the lines he's taking from take-off?

I'm liking the '7-0' pinny as well, but I'm not sure if I would ever get to use it to it's full potential :?

There's some great footage of JT surfing a '70's pinny at Pipe on an old movie called 'Untitled' if you ever get a chance to see it.

Passing me by - The Pharcyde from Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde, quality album out circa 1994/5 - they're old enough to have played the Hacienda in 1997-ish, good gig I can tell thee. Sample from Are you experienced by Hendrix

Yo mamas so phat

Bloody ace album, were some really good remixes of Passing me by and 4 otha fish at the time too

As for the oddballs, those asym boards are totally radical but I don't really get some of the concepts, are they built entirely with one wave in mind or just with a riders preference for forehand/backhand approach?

I think i can get the idea of an asym tail if built for a particular wave but an asym nose? What benefits could that give you?

That link above to the diamond tail with the wing fin looks ace as well, looking forward to getting my bonus from work early next year, I am already priming the missus to expect a couple of new custom boards, planning on a 9'1 and something else that I'd like to be pretty different to all the toothpicks and quad fish that are appearing round here these days, any radical suggestions could be entertained!

Well, I guess the premise is how you apply pressure to the rail on either your toe edge or your heel edge, rather than just for particular spots (as you go 'both' ways on both lefts and rights when you cutback?)

As far as how that difference in input translates to the best outline for each edge, I wouldn't know where to start... Maybe the toe edge merits a slightly longer rail line??

Even Slater has got Merrick to shape him up a couple of Asyms in the past, which I believe he may have competed on. McCoy also shaped Cheyne Horan a really short Asym, designed purely for him to try carving 360s at Waimea in the early '80's... :?

As for those Meyerhoffer boards... well, God knows! Although it's interesting that they share a similar sidecut design to Tom Morey's Swizzle boards. Does that work alongside the flex, like a snowboard? God knows...

that short board posted by Archy is called a Thumb, not sure who created it, but reviews say there a blast - noseride and hack...

i think an asym board can be both rider, or wave tailored just like a normal board. I have two, but they are both old school, so modern ones would have to be more dialed in.

I found the link to Joel's site on the surfer mag bb, so not to much credit due, but the comments weren't so nice over there....

He's someone who has always been a pleasure to watch surf, and if anyone could be credited with helping bring glide back into surfing he would have to be one of the nominees. I have always wondered why not many people are riding fish at Pipe. In theory you have an easy in, barn stormer bottom turn, rail oriented fin to hang on the ledge, and loads of down the line speed all in the fish platform, it only makes sense. But, there ya go, under the microscope most of us are pretty conservative.

Yeah, I mean a carve into it, rather than a full 'donut'...

http://surfeuropemag.com/features/categ ... 12269.html

In my lifetime, Beschen at Trestles, Slater and Brucey at Backdoor are all I can remember! (Actually, I can remember a sequence of Slats almost making a carving 360 to revert in Indo a few years back.. freaky.. :? )

Not sure if Horan actually pulled one off though... I will try to find out!
