The 2+1 and Widowmaker discussion

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

Would someone be good enough to tell me how to upload photographs. I seem to be having a spot of bother.

You need a flickr (or similar) account. Then link the pic to here using the IMG code.

What are the dims? Did Jools supply it with fins or did you get your own sorted?

Many thanks for your board wisdom arch, prior to ordering. Got hold of a copy of Glass Love and after watching the Purchase crew kill it, I sealed the deal.
Dims are 5'6" x 18 1/4" x 1 1/4". I know that sounds floaty/boaty but please bare in mind that I am 67 and weigh 22 stone.
I think the fin set Jools supplied is the same as yours but I'm planning to foil down the centre fin to give it more flex or fit the Liddle fin from my Hull with smaller Greenough side bites.

flacky, I may be willing to p/ex the board for your wife. Post some pics of her.

Mr. Idiot,
that's a lovely bit of work and as if it isn't enough that the board is making me sweat, it's a nice reminder of how long it's been since I've seen a wave worthy of a widow set-up. There's a 6'6" Parmenter kicking around I've heard of that I can't afford as well, and Mackie has an incredible looking Bonzer 3 he's unloading so maybe it's best there aren't waves? Great board, your mate Jools should be rightly proud of that one.

Real dims are 6'8" x 20 1/2" x 2 7/8". I eat volume for breakfast.

Good size... A decent amount of foam seems to work well on these sort of boards I reckon.

My new 6'2 is bigger all round than it would be if I had ordered a standard thruster, as is my 6'6 Diplock.

A bit of extra width and thickness works well with a forward widepoint and foil.

As an aside, I noticed that Mick Mackie is doing some nice singles at the mo. All of them are over 2 3/4" thick. My guess is that the volume is used to sustain that forward momentum you get with a good single.

VI - if you like that Neal P footage in glass Love, I suggest you try to get hold of a copy of Hot Buttered's 'Soul' as well; there is some great footage of the Fitz bros riding Driftas and singles in south Africa.

Drifta action in Believe as well.
How's that new board going Arch?
Ocean gone and turned into a lake the last couple of days.
Kookster only ordered his new board - hasn't even picked it up yet and the ocean has gone flat in anticipation.
That McCoy fella has powerful juju!!!
By the way don't forget there's a surf swap meet on Sunday week at "Da bomb" Maroochydore.
Come one, come all.

Hi Cuttle,

Rode it 3 times only so far....

That aside, I've had a few sessions on it in different conditions and settled into things nicely with a 6.5 bamboo centre and some 3.8 sides. It's really versatile as I had hoped and has all the positive attibutes of the B and W with a slightly wider tail to accommodate my, ahem, frame.. Love it.

Oh, what the hell, any excuse to post pics of nice boards- here's the Bonzer which is almost a 2+1 as it's got a big center fin and two 'smaller' ones

The outline is definitely applicable to the thread, and those big flexy centre fins have gotten some good feed back- I've yet to try one.

[quote="Archy_is_God"]Hi Cuttle,

Rode it 3 times so far before the wind caught it in the car park and blew it into a post... It's currently getting a patch up on the bottom.

Geez, I hope you were distracted by the same kind of sight I was whilst not paying enough attention to your board.
Carpark, beachside, walking through house kind of dings BLOW!
Nothing wrong with that 2+1 shooter Kirk...sleek.

this one went really well with the right fins set up which was not the winged keel, I hated that fin, tried it in 3 boards, it didnt work in any of them for me, but put a standard template, 7" flexy cheap plastic in the centre and small curved side fins and what a different beast, this thing loved a back point soft running left I used to surf a bit, was a regrettable sale...

Mark , wing-keels rarely work on super light boards ....unless they're set up at the correct angle with the bottom rocker..... 8)

dont really know if it was the weight of the board coz I tried it on 3 boards and they were all varied weights and design, it felt bad in all of them to me...but thats just me....it was all learning for me, I hadnt tried a keel for a long time, the other one was in a thruster I converted as a curious grommy when I was about 16....

I love my Starfin in the Black and White pinny featured earlier in this thread. That board has a pretty flat rocker line on the stringer, with most of the rocker out on the rail through the tail. I used it with some PGL glass sides, which seems like a lot of fin, but made all the difference.

I'm not convinced it will work on my new board as well, mainly because it has more flip in general through the tail, but I'll give it a go at some point I reckon.

I reckon you gotta have the right board for those fins to reallyt work well, not convinced Cheyne shouldnt have won at least one title, but I respect him for riding what he believes in....probably awaken some full on Cheyne, McCoy fan and he will tell me how great these fins are...each to their own ...

It's because of the lift produced by the wings.if the box is installed at the wrong angle , the fin will " fight" the board for trim...they're magic when tuned in (like McCoys).. :-)

Shackattack, all I know is it's 7'! It's one of Mick's quiver that he's selling on, he's been riding these bigger bonzers quite a bit in the reef waves he has locally and seems pretty stoked on them. There's another one here.

And to keep it all on a more 2+1/widow track, here's what Parmenter says was one of the main influences:
