Lokbox Fin Mod - Coxie/AB3?

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

Lokbox Fin Mod - Coxie/AB3?

Postby MJE » Thu Oct 11, 2012 7:59 pm

Had a couple of problems with Lokbox this year: broke 2 fin boxes.

Both involved hitting something where in theory the fin should pop out (tab would break) but ended up with lost fins and damage to boards:

1. After repair:

Hit rock. Box pushed back/up into deck. Repaired but dip in hull behind fin box.

2. Before repair:

Box completely fucked, snapped and pushed deep up into board.

(Big thanks to the prick who paddled for the shoulder)

Anyone else seen this?
Obviously impact to front of fin causes them to push back/up into rear of fin box before release. Thinking tabs are too strong.
Going to file down the tabs on my other boards to make them weaker...any thoughts? (bar get fcs / futures)

You can see where the force went straight across the strongest part of the tab and the amount of force that it took to snap it there imagine what it would of done to the other brands of boxes
Lokbox tend to pop fins when you get a side impact
I'm not sure weakening the tab will help when you take a heavy front impact

In 6 years of using lokbox I've had three boards back for repair all from major front impact but its generally just a simpler repair than the other boxes due to les collateral damage

Agreed, i think you see way less damage to the actual board from big impacts with lok box.
If that was any other fin system, as well as a trashed box you would be looking at a massive chunk ripped out of the bottom of the board.
As it stands that is a nice clean break and an easy fix.

This happened to one of my fins a couple months ago;

never fixed a ding/box like this before but had a go and it came out like this;

This is before I sanded off the hotcoat. Reckon it was easier than I had made it in my head, looks like your fix in the top pic is better than mine though :wink: Have seen FCS boxes trashed and torn chunks of foam out before though, lokbox was pretty clean and easy to repair. Didn't lose a fin either which was nice!

just fitted new fins to my lokbox and noticed the plates are a little bent from prev use. this ok? they went in tight and seem to hold the fins fine. is it worth trying to straighten them out a bit?

The good thing about Lokbox is you can straighten them if needed
As long as they aren't too bent as in fin wobbles loose they should be fine just check them after next surf

This happened to 2 out of 3 boxes on my fish, you can just rebuild the box and reinstall it, seems to be fine so far
