Nigel semmens board quality..?!?!?!

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

Nigel semmens board quality..?!?!?!

Postby Johnny_rad » Tue May 28, 2013 2:18 pm

Hi
Has anyone else had a board of Nigel they are not happy with?

Probably the worse quality board I have EVER had.

Left it cure for a couple of months.

Creased it on its 5 outing in 2ft surf.. After about 10 surfs in small waves, is in worse nic than my 3 year old Webber that I have surfed to death..

Wanted a Semmens board since I was a kid. Will never buy anything form OM factory again..

So, did you take it back to the factory? Have you spoken to anyone at OM?

Do you think it is fair to come on here and bag a well known and respected brand without any balance from them?

Do you have feet like anvils?

aussie boards or ones from the us. don't have any probs with either, though i'd say aussie ones are best.

It could have been a dodgy blank overshaped on a machine. It would be worth your while to take it up with OM and if no success take it to a small claims court.

Overshaping on machines worries me. You'd expect Ocean Magic to have good QC, put it down to bad luck maybe?

got a secondhand NS Bullet...was in almost perfect condition as second hander, i was amazed actually. i've landed upside and sideways on it a few times now and it's stood up well, one pressure ding only from a failed aerial. great board

Nigel, and the entire crew at Ocean Magic are top notch. In fact, they're as good as anyone in any factory in any country I've worked in, including the US.

Sounds to me like the blank was a dud. It's a bummer for you, but I'm sure if you took it to the factory, they'd work something out with you. And before anyone blames UK quality, this type of thing happens everywhere. I just cut open a air bubble I could fit my hand inside in a top quality surfboard blank. Blank looked fine until I took a couple passes off the bottom.... shit happens.

I've been out of the UK for a while now, but still surprised to see people bashing the local quality. Considering the big 3 US brands have such varying quality, and still are held up as the holy trinity goes to show how much marketing and hype can do...

I thought most of the people who buy US boards are in the UK are buying machine shapes glassed at euroglass

Yeah, I had a similar thing with Circle One, but I went to their rep first, then when that didn't do it, I went through to the company, got a call off Jeff himself.
He did his best to appease me, but the stuff he gave me was just pants. I got a cheap board and wetsuit out of it, but that's exactly what it was, cheap. Wetsuit was binned and the board sold very cheap.

Good luck to him, but the claims he made weren't backed up and while I've not gone out of my way to slag them off ad hoc, I've given my opinion when asked for it.

Do it in private, then in public if you get nowhere.

OM are top lads making great products, not just for themselves but for more labels than people realise.

Royal could be right on the dud blank, but the truth is any board can snap at any time, even in small surf.. one of those things. Come to think of it, I've only snapped one board in overhead surf and that was because the rail popped out of the face and I effectively fell onto it on the flats.

Hi
If Jonny rad would like to let me know his reall name and get hold of me as he has never spoken to me about this . I will do my best to sort his board out. Do find it strange when they dont complain direct to the people that made the board.

An adage for modern life; It's easier to moan about something than do something about it.

He doesn't seem to come on here very often, if you drop him a personal message (click on PM icon under his name) that should get a message direct to an active email address.

Ahem.....

BOOOM!

If that doesn't show character, I don't know what would.

Top notch builder, top service.

This is why you should stand behind and support your local crew!

Going back a few years (as usual) I had a Maurice Cole. Lovely board, rode it for a week then snapped it in gnarly Porth C.

Contacted Nigel who was licensed to do MC's, did me a great deal on a new one, top, top as we say.

Ive bought 5 ns boards in the last three years very good shapes and good quality boards im heavy on boards 90 kg and i have had no quality issues . Was looking at 2 600 quid shortboards made by a very well regarded us shaper both the same model just 2" different in length there were hanging in the rack and. Both rail shapes were totally different . dont beleive the hype !
