Which blank for a mini sim?

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

Which blank for a mini sim?

Postby Atomic » Wed Aug 07, 2013 3:22 pm

Hi All,

I'm a long time lurker about to try to make my first board. I was going to go the whole hog and try to B&Q EPS but now I think I'll make my life a little easier by starting with a blank. The question is, which one?

There's this one:
http://www.trioceansurf.co.uk/surfboard ... -710-blank

Or this one:
http://www.trioceansurf.co.uk/foam-surf ... -611-blank

Neither of them are perfect. The minimal will let me chop a foot off either end and leave me with:

Nose = 19.75" and 2.25" rocker
Mid = 23.5" and 3.25" thick
Tail = 16" and 2.125" rocker

The Fish would be a foot off the tail:
Nose = 7.75" and 4.5" rocker
Mid = 24.5" and 3.375" thick
Tail = 19.25" and 2.25" rocker

Clearly there's features of both that I like and dislike. I like the wider tail and thicker mid section of the fish but not the nose rocker. I like the nose rocker of the minimal but not the reduced width if the tail....

Now, I know I could get this Sim blank:
http://www.homeblown.co.uk/product/359/

But it's £125.89 including shipping, while the fish is only £72.35 and the minimal £79.55... so it's got to be one of these two unless someone can suggest a better option...

So, what's the best compromise here? Too much rocker and a narrow nose on the fish or thinner tail and less width on the minimal. Help please....

I reckon there's something weird going on with the Homeblown website.

I've been looking at blanks myself and it is quoting between £40 and £70 for postage depending on which blank you choose, which just can't be right - Seabase charge £15 for delivery.

I reckon a phonecall to Homeblown and you would find that the shipping charged are in fact a lot cheaper.

There was a complete kit on flea bay the other day. Looks like it didn't sell, so worth a try...X-tra though.

I spoke to mason about that kit, he reckoned you'd be looking at 5'6 ish to get anything fish like out of that blank.

trigger finger remained unpulled.

Homeblown do a minisim blank but I don't like the rockers on it I get them to modify a 6'8 fish blank for mine with 0 tail rocker and 2" nose rocker works real nice
