Longboard Fin Choice

Postby nawgy1979 » Thu Aug 29, 2013 9:39 am

I'm after some advice on a longboard fin - I have read up as much as I can but wanted to check if anyone else has some thoughts.

I have a Loose Fit Lonsedale 9'2 longboard (pintail and 2+1 based upon a Fireball shaped by Diplock I belive) and currently have a RFC Wingnut 10" squirrel type fin in the board which seems to go OK and also have a Captain Fin Co. Mitch Abshere D type fin which I am not sure should be used in a pintail type board.
In terms of style I like a good bottom turn, in to trim and then head for the nose with a nice cutback when required.

Can anyone give me some guidance on what fin would be best suited to the board - I am thinking of a Skip Frye, Greenough 4A or Farebarrow type fin of about 9" ?

Cheers.

I love my Captain Fin Co Al Knost Flex and think it would work well,

Try a nineplus pivot for nose time.

Farebrow flex would be a good try too, Baj is selling one on here, but I think he's sampling some Moroccan delight.

Don't go too big on the farberow theres a lot of volume in that fin. 9" will be plenty. I got a 10" and its too much fin unless you got a big old log with a super wide tail. Its a great fin by the way. Also consider the md3 detemple fin 9", a fin I use regularly and swear by. Also like the wingnut longrake, a great fin that will work in your pintail same again around the 9 or 9.5" mark. If you want to chug down the line with max stability and just go for the nose on every wave try a nine plus keel.

The greenoughs Ive tried haven't been my bag but maybe I need to put more time in with them? The detemple is a very similar template and works for me. I have never tried a skip frye fin, never fancied one to be honest. Maybe Im missing out?
