Board for a big lad?

Postby h20ruf » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:54 am

Hi guys/gals,

Having hired boards a couple of times, foam topped jobs, I have been told they are probably not best for me to learn on by a couple of people, due to my size.

I am 5'10" and 15 stone.

I would like to get something that will catch more or less anything, but not too big that it's awkward to transport as I live 2.5 hours from the nearest beach, and about 4 hours from the surf!

Would something around 8' suffice, or bigger?

Dont want to buy new, or spend a fortune, as I am dipping my toe in the water...pun intended.

Any advice appreciated.

An 8 foot mini mal will do. But id go for a 9'6" longboard to start on but yes they are a pain to transport around.........

Just about to gp out on an 8' mini mal in a bit, so see how I go with that.

Dont want to get something too big that I will outgrow quickly and cant transport!

Will see how I get on.

Anyone see a floundering fat lad at Sandymouth or Bude in the next couple of hours, just laugh and poke him with a stick.

You dont grow out of longboards - unless you get really really big :) Like needing a boat!
I bought first a smaller board but then a surfing teacher put me on a longboard and that smaller board is in a dark corner in the cellar ever since. It is just a preference thing, do what you like.

I'm 5'9" and 14st at moment, although it should be nearer 12.5. I ride a 9'2" most days, not too chunky either. But in past couple of years I've had a skinny thin 6'6" thruster and a 6' fish and caught waves no problem. Foam is your friend and you'll be surprised how short you can go with a bit more effort, so it depends on what you want.

Me? I'd prefer less effort more reward. Thank you.
