lessons or practice?

Postby egguns » Sun Jan 16, 2011 8:52 pm

I have been learning to surf mainly on uk south coast so, decent waves few and far between, making progress albeit very slow. got the basics but struggling with getting to my feet and once on my feet struggling staying on the board.
no intention of giving up any time soon and enjoying simply being out in the water.

I have a long weekend booked at perran sands in april and wonder if i should simply get as much water time as poss. or if i should swallow my pride and get professional help (a lesson or two)

if lessons, please recommend surf guru local to perran.
(being 45 and a little sluggish need mentor up for a challenge)
will have a couple of teenage sons in tow who may also need some surf guidance

I did look at the list of surf schools but cba trawling thru it and also feel you cant beat personal recommendations.

Give me a pm closer to the time & I may be able to meet up and give a bit of advice on how to fall off gracefully & things like that. Seriously though I may be able to point out some issues although I'll understand if you ignore the internet weirdo & go with a school. I've never used the surfschools so couldn't say which is good or not.

Certainly will send p.m.
I see you're local, that's handy, you can also suggest a good pub and I'll buy you a few beers :)

Hi Black and others,
Managed to arrange some extra days at Perran Sands 3rd week in March (thanks to Daily Mail holiday offer).
Fingers crossed surf conditions are favourable and my car is up to the challenge.
Will pm Black re. the possibility of meeting up for some surf guidance.
Other offers of advice or surf instructor recommendations would be appreciated.

I leaving Cornwall this morning to return to my normal life of very occasional small or wind blown southcoast waves.
Before I go home, I want to say thank-you to Black for taking me under his wing, meeting up on several occasions giving advice and guidence.
I am very pleased that I surfed more than one location, put in plenty of practice. and I believe, improved my surfing.
Most enjoyable, Perran sands in march, crantock and little fistral last night, none of which. I believe to be secret spots so nothing given away.
Cheers Black(?) :P
