Anyone know the trick to paddling towards a wave, swinging around and effortlessly catching a wave

Seriously rodent it may be to do with that foot paddling under the board.
Deffo gets you turned round quicker depending which way your feet are paddling.
Is that what you mean or is it something else you have seen done?

Thanks, it's been something I've always wanted to practice but afraid to try, normally I paddle over sets and wait for one I'm in position for, as aposed to paddling towards waves and turning to catch

Funnily enough I've just been watching everyones favourite DVD 110% surfin techniques...
There's a move the bloke makes referred to as the 'cork bobbing' technique.
He sort of ducks the board and turns... He seems to use the momentum of the board popping up to catch the wave without paddling...

Saw a guy doing this on a longboard last night....it was only 2-3ft, but he'd paddle at it, turn, stroke maybe once or twice and drop in to the wave....he then proceeded to walk up to the nose, turn around a couple of times, and walk back down the board....one of the most impressive displays of logging I've seen!

When 'cork bobbing' there's a fine line between getting it spot on and taking a nice late drop and the alternatives of the wave passing you by or going over the falls........

Practice makes perfect Rodent. Are you doing this on a shortboard or a mal, btw?

Saw a longboarder try it on monday and he got absolutely paste'd, but it was super impressive nonetheless

One thing I noticed some guys doing and which I try myself with occasional success is at seemingly the last minute to face toward take off and almost pull the board back under your bum as the wave rises behind you. This pops the board forward with the wave and you can get away with a later paddle and paddle fewer strokes. There are days when I can do it and I get a high wave count and others where I'm just not feeling it so I guess it does just take practice. Plus I only ever tried it with a short board as you/me/they pull it back by grabbing the rail up at the nose

I was thinking about this in the water yesterday and I remember a film years ago with Mark Richards at Haleiwa I think.
He was paddling out, going up the face of a wave and just jumped to his feet, turned the twinnie and started riding the wave......... Now there's a skill......
