Best way to exit a wave?

Postby dermo909 » Wed May 08, 2013 9:21 am

I'm just wondering what people do to exit a wave when the wave eventually closes out. I try to get over the back of the wave before the last section breaks but failing that, what is the best technique. I surf a longboard mostly and in nice sized surf the board can pull quite hard on the leash if I just dive off into the whitewater. I don't want to strain the leash too much because I don't fancy swimming in if the leash breaks.

What's the most elegant way of getting off the wave if there's no real exit point?

moonwalk back to the tail of the board, lift the nose and kick out.

Or...do this...

If it's hollow, pull in.

And get fitter, so the swim doesn't matter.

Try back stepping to the tail and sinking it quickly to stall the board, so the wave passes you by. Drop back to the deck and paddle out again.
