Jo makes as many if not more suits for men than women right now. I gave two if them and they are super comfortable and stylish. I even wore my 3/2 in in New Year's Day last year and wasn't even close to cold.

Contact her. You really can't go wrong.

How does it work though, if Slynk is produced at Snugg, how do they balance their business?

I mean it's nice to have a sister company but in effect Slynk is a rival company to Snugg.

I sort of prefer Slynk design than Snugg if the contrustion / neoprene material / production quality are equivalent to Snugg. Just a personal first impression.

I like polar bear though.

Personally I think we should live in a climate that doesn't require wetsuits. I have no problem finding shorts that fit and that keep me cool in the sunshine.

I'd rather surf in a wetsuit than getting my leg munched by shark, exfoliating my face on a shallow reef, get a third degree burn from UV ray, etc..

I prefer weeing on weaver fish and covering myself in rubber... just a bit of ground swell and sunshine now and then would be suffice.

The deal is that Slynk designs the suit and listens to the customer, takes the measurements etc but then goes to Malcolm at Snugg for his expertise to actually manufacturer the suit. They aren't a sister company. They are Slynk using Snugg to make their designs and as Snugg like Slynk's designs they are appy to be linked to Slynk. Hope that makes sense. Also they feed off of each other for ideas. Jo (because she doesn't have Malcolm's experience) will suggest something and query why it can't be done a different way. Malcolm then gains from a fresh perspective.

I just know that it works well between them and I really like Jo's ideas. I have two suits that I am super happy with. Very warm, very comfortable and really nice style and cut to them.

^^ Oh and yes! the untilate wetsuit. The one that fits perfectly, so cheap, so flexible, so warm, so durable, so quick drying, and free of funky fish smell!

And thanks onefinleary for the Slynk-Snugg relationship, it sounds really good! I'm due down in Cornwall in few weeks so I will make a visit to Snugg and have a chat, at least get the measurements. I need to get my money together...

No worries. I'd contact Jo rather than call into Snugg as she will take the measurements [much better than having Malcolm measure you, hahhah.]

Can custom wetsuit compete with latest wetsuits?

Postby slynkWetsuits » Wed Sep 25, 2013 12:40 pm

slynkWetsuits build wetsuits for MEN & WOMEN for all seasons, design/custom/made to measure. Custom suits also allow you to choose the thickness/lining of your panels... the 'full suits' album in the photos section on the FB page show a small selection of back zip & MiNiZiP suits... essentially a custom gives you more choice, not only in colour and styling, but crucially in thickness and fit, hope this is useful, Jo.

seams: glued, blind stitched & taped - newest tape is narrower and has more stretch eliminating stiffness over time
neoprene: yamamoto double lined (limited colours) smooth skin and shark skin, available with AZ (fleece) ultra span most colours, available with AZ (fleece)
longevity: built to last & perform, pricing from £279 3/2

BOOM!

My first custom suit sketch!!

Image

It's 3/4mm hooded chest zip by S L Y N K!! I'm going to have the smooth skin on both chest and back panel so the pocket for my moisturiser and hair cream is going to be on my left deltoid. Everyone needs a bit of moisturiser while in water, yes? The pocket is for the car / house key...

I

CANNOT

WAIT!

Yup hence the custom suit. NO, please note that the sketch isn't scaled... I'm more like a figure of hulk. Just not green.

Or no. 5? If it is those white bits of the suit might need bleaching.

Looking good. I'm in my Slynk 3/2 right now (well not exactly right now. It's not what I'd choose to browse the internet in) and it's so warm and comfortable.

Whereabouts? Most people in the SW will still be in a 3/2. I'm intrigued to know if custom suits are warmer, meaning you can get away with thinner neoprene....?

Yup, probably is. It'll be my winter suit. I only surf in southern England so I'm confident that it'll be more than plenty warmth for my need. If I do go further up north (like Ireland in Christmas!) then I have a thermo rash and hopefully it'll be enough.

Which brings me to your question, Leven. I cannot say at first hand yet, but I am pretty confident that a perfect fit wetsuit can go thinner and still be as warm as "off the peg" thicker wetsuit. You hear for those who have custom fit suit that it's much warmer than generic size suit and they usually have thinner suit. I haven't heard a custom suit being less warm than non-custom suit.

So warmth and durability, I think custom fit is the winner. Latest technology (quick dry, less flushing, trend etc) and flexibility aren't as good as the top-end range from the usual suspects, I expect. BUT I could be proved wrong!

I've always worn 3/5mm S or MS suit, but I've gone for 3/4mm custom fit. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it.

Not sUre a custom can fit any better, and therefore be warmer than an off the peg if you have a generic "normal" body shape though? I've got an XCEL LT, and it fits me brilliantly, as I guess I am the standard "lanky surfer" build.

Oh yes, of course. If you feel that your body fits in one of the generically made suits, then that'll be your "fit" suit. Then you're lucky because you have the perfect (or near-perfect) fit and all the latest thecnology and flexibility!

I wonder how the major brands decide that is Small, Medium, Large and everything else in between. C-Skins revamped their sizing in 2013, I wonder which population they based their measurements. People of Bodmin?

Leven, I wore my Slynk 3/2 on New Year's Day last year and I was comfortably warm for a few hours.

I showed the sketch to one of the locals and he literally laughed out loud and told me I'd look like a Pingu and he's looking forward to see me in it...

We'll see who's laughing when the bitter cold comes and they're shivering and I'm taking all the waves like surf's up!

I might learn the penguin walk while I'm at it.

Was just in at Slynk/Snugg and saw a glimpse of your suit DeFever. It looks great.

Was just talking to Jo about an east coast filming and 'body surf' submerged suit. Probably going for 6/5/4 but less neoprene on the back of my calf (as that's what causes my cramp) and really thin wrists (to stop the pressure on my carpal tunnel.) That's the great thing about custom. You can have any option. A winter suit with 1mm wrists for example. :-)

Ah snap! I was secretively checking Slynk's FB page to see if Jo has taken a picture of my suit... I'm meeting Jo and the suit tomorrow morning.

I CANNOT WAIT!

I'm already thinking of asking for a summer suit and a jacket. Also wondered if Jo would be interested in making a custom board socks...

I need to save some money though. I'm always trying to save money but these nice things like boards and wetsuits crop up every second, my finance can't keep up...

I'm bit angry that you got to see my suit before I did! only joking, thanks for the heads up!!
