Surf helmets.

This morning while surfing at South Fistral, I encountered a bang on my head when a gust of wind lifted my 9'6'' longboard in the air right above me just after I got off of it after a ride in and it nearly knocked me out.
Since it happened this morning I have been thinking about purchasing a surf helmet but I know little about them. For a start do they fill up with water if you go under? and looking at surf shops online, no one seems to have them. I have seen one or two on Amazon but the reviews are all from kitesurfers and kayakers and not surfers.
Anybody on here with any knowledge on helmets?

The Gath helmet used to be popular many years ago, now mostly used by tow-in, etc, you still see a few in the surf.

if you get one with a visor, its worth being mindful that if you get sand in it ( from disturbed seabed sand from a wipe out for example ), it can scratch the retractable visor when pulling it down or pushing it back up into the helmet... i had one in 1993 and my visor was scratched to fuck due to sand
