Is this the worst year for waves in over a decade?

Postby Chai Wallah » Mon Jul 16, 2012 8:40 pm

Is it just me or is this really the worst year for surf in living memory, it seems to have been months without a decent pulse of offshore groundswell

Yep...complete poop! Hopefully things will be on the mend as the Atlantic drift and Gulfstream are on the move 'up!'

Definitely the worst as far as I can remember. Two or so days of decent surf in over four months.

Been loads of short period (7/8/9 secs) swell, with onshore winds, and nothing big/powerful enough to wrap into any of the sheltered spots. Rubbish!

I was remarking on the quantity...not the quality...but as a Logger...size isnt everything

Of course mountain man those 15 second period 3 day long solid ground swells fanned by 3 mph off shores have been hitting your neck of Wales everyday for the last 4 months whilst everywhere else bar the north sea has been having onshore short period junk.

As long as you can Mark an S on your calendar it does not matter, even if it was dire.

Shame Mr B quoted you as you are in the same club as jonRn, deadly and Geno

Off the cuff mission with my mate today to Bmouth. No board or wetty with me and there was a fun ridable wave loitering. Was a bit gutted I didn't surf but it was only really take off and trim. Still looked super fun though.

Thinking about it... why the feck didn't I get in!!

Having my first a splash Tomorrow (regardless of the conditions).

Massively disagree , the last few weeks have been less than stellar but up till then it's been super consistent with so many clean days on the south it's ridiculous, one of the more consistent runs we've ever had imo,
If youre waiting for 15sec offshore you might wanna move abroad

Remember Jim, if its not a straight west swell with south-easterlies there arent waves. fact.

The main thing getting me is the temperature, all the rain water coming down the severn and south wales rives means i'm in my winter suit still, and I dread to think what kind of toxic sewage soup I'm surfing in as most CSO's have been open for weeks.

You obviously know nothing about surfing! 15 second wave periods? Never get that over here and as you don't know where and when I surf how can you possibly comment on what the surf has been like? You ask for opinions and then resort to sacastic disbelief if anyone dares to disagree. Still never seen any evidence that you actually surf. Armchair warriors are two a penny on the internet...

There's been about two good, offshore days in Cornwall in the last couple of months, and even then, the swell quality hasn't been brilliant. It's either onshore, or flat, and it doesn't matter where you go.

And we do get 15 sec periods and off shores in the UK, just very rarely. I surfed Porthtowan like that last year, and it was effing huge!

Well I'm referring to where I surf and have never seen over 13seconds and that is once in a blue moon job. The whole "point "of this futile thread was whether this has been the worst year in living memory well no as any surf is better than none and we've certainly had plenty of surf albeit of varying quality from crap mushy onshores to quality hollow offshores. There have been years where it's been completely flat for a month, not so far this year. Like I said, depends when and where.
