Elbow tendonitis. Again. Too much climbing and not enough surfing makes chris an injured boy. But sod it, yesterday was worth it;

..some classy spotting going on there :D (Unless she's casting an evil spell on your arse?)

If someone fell towards me from that height I'd just run away, having ample time to do up my shoelaces first.

Blimey - looks like lush weather up there!
Was pretty miserable here most of the weekend. And the surf was crap.

It's Child's Play at Bowden Doors, Northumberland. E1 6a or Ft 6b, depending how big the nads are. She was spotting me initially, but there was little point at this stage. From the brow of the hill by Kyloe you could see waves at Bamburgh, but we didn't have room for boards as well. Really pleased I did it, as have walked past several times and bottled out. Conditions were prime.

My shoulder is still knackered. In spite of loads of physio and theraband routines, damaged rotorcuff still does't like it when I pop up.

If you get a tight pain between/underneath the lower shoulder blade on one or both sides that sounds similar to what I had, an imbalance between anterior and posterior rotator cuffs, very common in surfers and swimmers. My physio gave me the following exercise (among others) and I find it works a treat.

1. Lie on your side with injured side highest.
2. Rest elbow/upper arm of injured side on the side of you body, straight from shoulder to hip.
3. Hold a smallish weight (at first) in the hand you have dangling with forearm at 90 degrees to upper arm.
4. Lower the weight so that your elbow rotates it into your belly then raise the weight, keeping your elbow against your side until you reach maximum rotation, you should be using your rotator cuffs round your shoulder blade and triceps rather than anything else.
5. Repeat for sets of 10 until you have done 50, maybe change sides between sets if you are getting it on both sides.

It takes a week or so to notice a difference the first time but if you persevere it'll sort itself out, I went through about 18 months of pain before I found out what was wrong and now get no problems with it at all, is just a case of evening up the muscles you do and don't use.

Of course I am not a trained physio so please don't take this as valid medical advice, only a relation of what worked for me.

http://www.theshortspan.com/features/injury/shoulder.htm is pretty good. Targeted at climbers, but surfers develop similar imbalance problems

Rotator cuffs are so easy to damage....my left one is a bit lagging

when doing bench i find my stablizer muscles/rotator cuff is letting me down before my chest..gunna start doing some exercises for it

not found surfing to be detrimental to it yet

To be fair ive not been injured for a while.

But heres the list from my extreme sports escapades.

28 Broken Arm Bones (about 15 seperate accidents)
1 double Wired elbow reconstrction
1 double plate lower arm reconstruction
1 Bone Graft to repair broken lower arm reconstruction after rebreaking
5 Broken Fingers
4 broken noses
numerous lacerations by snowboards/fins/car parts
Then 3 years no injuries YAY

Last year diagnosed with Soriatic Arthritis, so on painkillers/anti-inflam's/disease modifiers for life but still doing all my sports.

I'll give up the day they burn me.

I've finally not had crutches for a year last week, which I'm very proud of. I've torn the ligaments in both my ankles, both my knees, torn my hamstring, my quad, I've plit my shinbone down the middle where it joins the knee, I've dislocated my shoulder, had my leg run over by an ice-skate, had spontaneous infections in my knee and elbow...Oh yeah and I have Osgood-Schlätter :)
waiting for the great escape.

Cheers ATTMFK.....

Previous to the physio my arm was so bad I couldn't raise it at all. Its just the left shoulder. Hasn't been giving me much jip of late but it does feel weak. Its when it gets a sudden jerk that the pain comes back, like when you duckdive to shallow and the wave rips the board from your arms.

...however I think I should bow out of this thread. Sounds like Nisbet takes the prise for crash test dummy...crazy foo

ATTMFK its all true, I was gonna make a joke about how im known around the schools and then i decided against it as I sounded like a paedo.

How it happened.

Was young and rumours were rife of talent scouts in the park that day, pulled out all the stops, did a nice clean run and decided to go for broke. On the way up the ramp all was good, confidence was high.I was on blades just incase I wasnt clear.

I put both hands on the top rail and flicked my body up, there I was in all my glory handstand on top of the vert. *braind goes backflip out* SO i bend my elbows, and cause a pop to give me the momentum to flip out of it, (in hindsight physics let me down, damn you einstein).

In stead of a clean backflip, i kind of just pushed myself away from the ramp in a handstand and 15 foot in the air, I realise its going wrong, my uncles voice enters my head like obiwan speaking to luke, "When i fell off a ladder I put one leg out to save the other." So i pulled my right arm in and put my left out. Thining back maybe jedi levitation would have been a better choice. but meh.

Cant remember the snap. I got up thinking just a dislocation, as I examine my wrist with other hand i cut my palm. wtf????? Then the looks on the staff's faces. I tilt arm and i see my bones coming out in two places.

All I remember is cursing lots and then getting high while rushed in ambulance to hospital. Morphine drop later, watching a&e was like watching ER on acid.

Of course I never turned pro, the rest of my buds all got injured over the years, now we just surf & snowboard.

*wipes a tear* haha

Either that or as fragile as glass and accident prone

I count myself lucky I only have median tendon injuries in both arms which makes paddling a bitch at times and a slipped disk and neumerous spines in my feet, some of which are still in there somewhere and get reminded of their presence now and again!!

Yeah I'm mildly accident prone. And I'm the kind of idiot who doesn't take enough care with minor injuries and gets herself stuck with crutches every other month.

Mashed up my back skating barny skate park this morning... dropping in, went over backwards, slammed into the concrete and was insane agony for about 10seconds and then I just had a lie down for a few minutes before getting up for a quiet sit. Decided to get back on the horse and did another couple before driving my sorry arse home. Fell asleep and the thing has locked up so I can't twist or bend. Between the lines NHS direct told me to man up and put some ice on it. Thank god no one was there to see, but if you heard an unusual AAARGH echo across Rock Park about 8am ... that was me.
