it was never going to work and never meant to be the main focus of the regeneration of the area...boscombe seafront is a much safer and nicer place now because of the regeneration. there was a time that you couldnt walk on the beach without having to be wary of needles...

This is no failure on a global scale for articicial surfing reefs and coadtal protection.

It's a shame boscombe council fell for an experiment and heads should roll as that was public money.

I love the innovation. This is not a failure. Lessons have been learned and someone somewhere will come back with improvements.

I just hated the attitude of ASR. Up their own arses and completely blinkered to local input. That's why they fell over.

I dunno about heaven on the planet, the wave would have to be better than that to be heaven. Ekas is definitely fun and its a nice place to be, but not quite indo perfection, its a weird shifty wave, and the inside break is fat.

Would love to know how the rock ones in Borth (Royal Haskoning, not ASR built) are fairing up surf wise... anyone? There's a few pics up on MSW from that area but don't think any associated with the structures there.

I would have thought that dropping mega boulders in the sea, maybe pinned at the edges with some steel, would be far better than sand bags. Would certainly be better for the sea critters and wouldn't be subject to getting hammered and busted by big storms.

I can't help but think they way overcomplicated it.. Dump a load of big boulders in a big triangle, any surfer could work out where you want to put them, blend it into the surrounding bathymetry a bit too.

Yeah it really doesn't have to be that hard, "geotextile sand bags" is like a solution in search of a problem, we've been building breakwaters, piers and jetties all over the place out of piles of big boulders for hundreds of years, its easy and cheap and it lasts forever. Kind of reminds me of the old story (dunno how true this is) about how NASA spent millions of $$$ designing a pen that would work upside down, in zero gravity, underwater etc. while the russians just used pencils.

They were maybe concerned with liability issues if somebody hit boulders and hurt themselves, at least with sandbags I guess they could try to say they made it a soft landind

The rock defences at Aberdeen beach haven't shifted at all since they went in. Just a shame they aren't deep enough and the wrong shape.

I was against these reefs from the beginning ( around 2000 when one was planned here in the Bay of plenty) and up until the last few years most surfers were all for them.

It's crazy that Bournemouth councillors went on an ASR funded trip to NZ to check out the Mount Reef but only spent about 5 minutes there on a flat day and refused to take advantage of the offer by some of the locals to discuss the reef. Instead they went to Rotorua sightseeing and living it up. As I recall quite a few weeders were still pro reef back then.

banks outside of them can be bloody good on a suitably low tide though, needs a bit more east in the swell than the majority of swells we get for them to work well but I have had a couple of great sessions out there.

I think your memory is a bit fucked roy. The majority of knowledgeable weeders always thought it was a bad idea.

i was one of the main weeders against the idea not because of any problem with reefs artifical in general but more based on the knowledge of the area and the conditions at boscombe having surfed the area for 20 yrs and as far as dave weights knowledge in that twenty years i only saw him in the water once there in that time the only real viable positioning would have been southbourne but there wouldnt have been the development and no brown envelopes.... they should have gone to dr tony butt the oceanographer as he like myself spent the 80 and 90 s surfing this stretch instead of hiring the kiwi mercenaries who anyone with a knowledge of the nz fiasco would have known it was going to end in tears.

True, I've had some OK sessions on the bank just south of the southerly one when the rest of the beach has been crap, but if they were deepr and in a nice V shape they would do a whole lot more..
