VW Caddy as a surf van

Postby petegee56 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 9:49 am

Anyone using a VW caddy as a surf van, particular keen to hear from anyone who has managed to put a bed in the back. Not to keen on the maxi so looking at sticking to the SWB version. there are a few conversions knocking about. just wondering if it will be too much of a squeeze for me the mrs and the dog to sleep in.

Cant really afford to run T4 T5 size van so thought the caddy might be a good compromise.

I've got one, and does me fine!

It'll be a bit of a squeeze with you, the Mrs and a dog, so you might want to take a tent or craft some sort of awning for the side door too.

Basically, I've put a raised bed in the back, so I can slot boards underneath, diagonally from corner to corner. I've also got a little twin hob gas cooker on a sliding tray that comes out from the side door. Bed is only 4ft wide, but it's a full 6ft long. You just need to build it in such a way that you can fold it. I'm 6ft and can sleep in the back in a straight line, but I have to put the seats in the front forward first (no hassle to do this though).

It's cosy, and a little cramped but it's also about 1/2 the cost to run of a T5! I get about 500 miles from a £70 tank of diesel (with a roof rack), and it's £50 a tyre. In comparison, my old T5, I got 500 miles from a £100 tank of diesel, and paid £100 a tyre!

I took her down to France for 10 days last September, and stayed in it all the time, no worries. Just be aware when you fit a bed etc, that there's only barely enough room to sit on the bed, without banging your head on the roof!

Awesome. That's the perfect info I was looking for.

I have been looking at the 3/4 beds that you put in a t5 and they will fit in a caddy so I'm looking at doing that. I was hoping to be able to put seat belts in the back and use the bed as rear seating too so I will keep an eye on the head room. That was my main concern.

Good to know you can fit in at 6 foot that the same as me and planned to slide the boards underneath the bed like what. What size board you got my longest it a 6"8

I was looking at getting one of the tents that fit on the back of the new caddy maxi camper and using that as a bit of strage space.

Thanks

Yeah, that'd work a treat with a tent on the back. Didn't know you could get one! Got a link anywhere?

I took a 5'10, 6'1 and a 6'3 to France, all under the bed (no fins) without a problem. You'd be able to fit a 6'8 in too, it'ss just come slightly farther down the van.

Its going to be my daily driver as well and i think the SWB about as close to car size as you can get, and to be honest its also a bit about looks. The maxi is the same width and the same height and so all you actually gain is length which yes you could throw some more storage in but I just really like the look of the SWB.

Cool pictures Leven, here is a picture if the official VW tent with the new Caddy tramper

I quite like the look of these though.
