Becoming accustomed to this consistant run of surf malarky.

Tired but stoked. :-D

That sucks! I'd get itchy feet after a few days of no surf. Only one thing for it, you gotta organise a surf trip or two.

Splinter: The swell has been pretty good for the last few months has'nt it!

I heard something on the news that the weather globally was getting more extreme:- more storms etc...At the risk of jinx'ing it, do you think more of our winters will be like this?

Well who knows really. The problem with weather is that patterns only become apparent retrospectively, so after they've happened.

For this neck of the woods, I'm finding it hard to remember a better winter so far... January was just sublime.

More waves later today?

Well that's cool to know. Was gonna ask you that morning at Croyde how this winter ranked for you but you got out before me.

It's our second winter living here and it's been amazing really.

Yeah was hoping for an afternoon dip, got one eye on the cams....

Obviously, when I was a kid it was epic and overhead almost all the time, at least that's how I remember it

I think it is the wind that has made the difference this winter - lots of calm days and offshores, but the banks have been good as well at different points with nice banks through the tides at Croyde.

I don't think it's been bigger, really... more that the swell hasn't always been accompanied by onshores like it is a lot of the time in winter.

I had a good surf the other morning - you have a fun one?

Am I imagining things or has it picked up at Croyde already looking at the cam? was flat as the proverbial pancake before work in Wales this morning. I've a horrible feeling its going to be one of those days where its head high in Croyde and ankle high in Wales!

It's definitely been a fun run of surf since Christmas. I remember one year in the early 2000's when it was consistently 2-5ft and offshore for three months about this time of year. Lets hope we can make it four months this time!

Yeah very good actually. Took a few drops to find one that opened up for me but once I did I scored quite a few good-uns.

Looks like the Mushy Pea suits you really well. I'd like to try another one myself at some point with different dimensions....

Not sure.....doesn't look like much going on at the mo, brisk offshore which probably isn't helping. Cornish buoys have picked up a little.......

Similar sketch for me after work at Banth. Only a couple of us out , some real nice waves coming through. Had a few nice'uns and got caught inside for ages but a great session overall.

Absolutely flawless shoulder high rights reeling through providing a seemingly endless supply of glassy, hollow walls over low tide today.

Literally non-stop. Catch a wave, paddle out, catch a wave, on repeat for 90 mins.

Only 2 other guys out and they were 100 metres away!

Absolutely spent but brimming over with stokeage. :-D

Really need to rest now.....

Was out at cgate with Splinter Weds avo, waves looked head'ish on the sets and fun, by the time I'd got in it had started to creep OH and I just felt like I had no chance of getting into them on the 5'2 Simmons I was on, it paddles well generally but in the bigger/thicker faster moving winter stuff I almost feel like I'm in quick sand at times, not sure if it's a psychological thing or an equipment thing to be honest as I've had my 6'3 shortboard out in winter juice and although that felt more comfortable on the occasional steeper drops I managed to get into I missed way more waves than I caught :| . After a chinwag with Splinter I'm kind of thinking a 6'8-6'10 eggy type shape with fairly foiled rails might make me feel a bit more comfortable in the bigger winter stuff and be useful on the smaller days too..... Probably a conversation for the shaping section!

Anywho, a few pics on my blog of Weds if you're interested http://dragonhilldiaries.tumblr.com/ - hoping a rideable wave presents itself in the morning so I can snag a quick couple before heading back the S Coast and watching Harry Redknapp get beat by the Saints at St Marys tomorrow afternoon

Twas Tuesday fella.

Yeah not the best day for a 5'2 x 23 mini simmons. Something with a bit more length required I reckon. Ooooh matron!

Good discussion on the subject here, nicely summarised at the end by Archy:
