Aye thats the one. Air pockets in water reflect more light than still water. Thus why ice /snow etc appears white.

Ah...so lets say in theory a wave machine which created a lot of white water was in a room that was 100% no light the 'white water' would be not white any more ? Also the samw with snow ? It wouldnt be 'white' in complete 100% darkness ?

when any wave (eg llght) hits a boundary between two substances then it will either be transmitted or reflected. the white water is full of tiny bubbles, each of which provides an air / water boundary. as water and air have significantly different refractive indices there is a very high probavility that as light hits this boundary it will be reflected. As the bubbles tend to be spherical then the light will reflect in a myriad of different directions, creating the "whiteness" you see, rather than anything resembling a coherent image. Water also tends to absorb some of the wavelengths of sunlight (which is why it looks blue) , meaning that the reflected light would contain a significant amount of blue light , looking 'clean' and even "whiter" .

if it was pitch black ie there was no light, then there would be no reflection, meaning that light would not eneter your eye. hence, you wouldn't "see" anything .other than black.......and at that black is just the absence of light........

as for the clapping the tree stuff, sound is just microscopic variations in air pressure - it makes no difference as to whether there;s an audience......

with the white water thing, just remembered that when out in atlantic on dads boat years ago, no light but white water from boat was phosphoresent...or however you spell it. is that a trick but it kind of glowed, think remember him saying its going through certain algae rich water creates effect like you get with glow worms.. am i dreaming or was this right ?

There are effects like that yes, for a certain time after dusk Algaes do emmit 'light'

Also even in the darkness night there is still some light, moon light, light refracted from beyon the horrizon via clouds etc...
