British Lions 2013

Postby mountain man » Tue Apr 30, 2013 11:56 am

Selection been announced and whilst most are as expected, a couple of poor inclusions and exclusions.

O'Driscoll - past it and too injury prone.
Bowe - only recently back from injury and nowhere near the best winger available.
Richie Gray - fantastic when fully fit and on form but crocked and even before then wasn't playing well.
Farrell lucky to get picked, probably father as assistant coach helped...

Christian Wade should have been picked instead of Bowe, blistering pace and could side step you in a phone box.
Ben Morgan should go, devestating No 8.

It's the British and Irish Lions not the English Lions.

Oh get you Mr Pedantic.
So now we've cleared up EXACTLY what team it is, any comments on the actual team?

I don't think you really got the point of my post. Anyway, Rory Best should be in the squad, other than that it's about right.

Stop it MM, some might consider that racially motivated name calling, you might call it banter but it's a fine line and you know it.

Agree about Bowe and Gray.

BOD goes because of his experience, and I think that's a good move. It's a long tour, and he's been there and done it. There's a lot of new Lions tourists too, so his experience will be important.

I'm genuinely astounded Robshaw has been overlooked. He was absolutely immense for England in the 6 Nations, and led from the front. He might not be an out and out 7, but shit he's good. Pisses all over Tipuric in terms of work rate, tackles etc for me.

Disappointed Wilko's not going. Know he made himself unavailable, but would've been an awesome swansong for an awesome player. And I say that as a Saffa who watched him demolish my team for a good (bad!) 5 years.

But overall, you've got a good squad there, with the players to do those canary-yellow shrimp-crematers over, it's just a case of the coach and captain getting everyone's heads right.

Matt Stevens and Dylan Hartley shouldn't be there, both penalty machines. Wade should be there. Is Maitland any good?

Well firstly thanks for the serious replies!

Hmmm even as a devout England supporter I think Tipuric is pretty good. Robshaw was excellent in 6 N but competition in back row very competive so disappointed not selected but not totally surprised.
Matt Stevens - very odd selection, I watched Toulon/Sarries game and he didn't do a lot. Vuinipolo was superb in open play so deserves chance, I think Gatland et al reckon Aussie scrum weak so can afford to take mobile front row.
Wade would cause mayhem on fast dry pitches, I would think Aussies glad he not selected! Maitland good player but I'd have gone for other Scot winger Visser, genuine pace and very strong.

As for Wilko, according to all reports he ruled himself out but with only 2 fly halfs going could easily be a late injury replacement.

Should be a cracking tour!

Indeed and in fairness O'Driscoll played well yesterday but I think it'll be Roberts and Davies in Test team with BOD and Manu on bench. Rory Best couldn't hit a barn door though in the line out...

Yep, even Aussie press and ex-players surprised at that. Seems very strange but apparently when the lawers get involved seemingly straight forward decisions get binned.

Hmmm Gatland has done some strange things in his time and this is one of them! No BOD, no Croft even on bench, Phillips to start at 9, Roberts in after no rugby for 3 weeks. Hibbard couldn't hit a barn from 5 yards never mind a line out. No Ryan Grant even on bench. Too many under performing Welsh. List goes on.

I assume you are Irish so why support Australia? I may not agree with all selections but still hope Lions win.

Was really looking forward to the deciding test but the axing of BOD and the over preponderance of Welsh players has left a distinctly hollow feeling. Have never been an admirer of WG's "smash'em upfront" approach and have enjoyed the Aussie's guile and intelligent use of the ball.

Still hope they win though.

I can kind of see the logic for the inclusion of Roberts but am surprised by the dropping of BOD. Would've preferred a combo of Tuilagi and BOD, but am guessing Tuilagi's shoulder still isn't quite 100%.

Would've kept Youngs in at Hooker too, now that Corbiserio's back at prop.

Phillips is going to get smashed at 9, not too bothered about BOD, Falateu at 8 worries me too. Understand Gatland wanting power, but it's not only power that you need to cross the gain line, it's guile, running lines etc too.

It's all very well saying about how strong the Welsh side is, 6 Nations winners etc, but when was the last time they won a series (or even competed!) in the Southern Hemisphere?
