Anyone know if it's getting released over here? Looks like a bit of fun. Wonder how much it's fictionalised.

Oh dear oh dear...I was excited when a snippet came out that there was going to be a new main stream surf film out. 'True to the core' was Gerard Butler's opinion....Was going to be called 'Of mavericks & men' I believe...Loved the title,A fantasic play on John Steinbeck's book.. thought Hollywood is going to treat surfing with respect & surfers with intelligence at last...Now called 'Chasing Mavericks' ..Hollywood now presumes surfing community are thick as sh*t & a 'to the point' title is probably enough words a surfer can cope with to read....fair point I suppose..
So I see just an updated 'Northshore' film complete with perfect looks Yank who dreams of riding d'big waves..Has rough diamond surf god teacher & for measure a playboy bunny bimbo thrown in for good measure...Jesus fekkin christ, 'based on a true story, my old backside'..I was looking forward to the October release as would be something to look forward to in winter.....Why does Hollywood do this each & every time....Surely there's a screen writer out there who can marry great script writing with a realistic scenario.....Every time the grey suits have an idea they get it so wrong...They should have called this film 'Half Moon Bay cheese'...!

Wonder if Dogs of Winter would ever be made into a film?

Gerald Butler looks very much like a Kem Nunn-style grizzled surf guru. I'm guessing he must have had an influence somewhere, even if he's not collecting a cheque.

I wonder what Jeff Clark thinks of his new look, and scottish accent?

It's funny but I always hate these things when they come out, then look back on them kind of fondly. Especially "North Shore".

Opinions on this film then?
I watched it the other day, and apart from being rather cheesy and predictable , I thought it was class. Ample quality 'panned-out footage of Mavericks, that lets you see the set-up in its entirety, as opposed to just zoomed-in footage of people riding the wave.
Some inspirational film of them training for big hold-downs and paddle fitness, so much so I went straight down the pool after watching it with some fins, and chased a brick around the bottom of the pool for a while (read:nearly drowned.)

You obviously not seen In God's Hands then?

There's an Aussie one called Drift too which is equally as watchable. :?

Endless Summer is epic. What's not to like about it?

And yes, sarcasm is one of my better virtues :-(

I wouldn't search too hard for it, it's not great.

Ok, I've just got to get this off my chest: I welled up a bit at the end of Chasing Mavericks. Did anybody else, or was it just me? :?

I had this on the digibox, so gave it a go last night, based on this comment. I lasted 20 mins, mostly in fascination at how fucking terrible a surf movie can actually be!!! Several people involved who really dhould know better.

i once lived in santa cruz,,,and alot of people still spoke of jay moriarty's legacy of being a mellow well mannered breath of fresh air to the surfing world (well needed in the area)
there were murals all over the place to "surf like jay"
i liked the film
brought back some cool memories of watching mavericks thinkin f that for a game of soldiers.
tes its hollywood, but its hollywood. $$$$ makes films

maybe if the jay ethos was spread a little further due to this film surely its a step in the right direction

now ....madmax

For everyone that needed kleenex for Chasing Mavs, this should be a little less emotional (no promises though)...

saw it the other day and thought it was watchable and a good story about fatherhood, regardless of the surfing element.
Butler wasnt supposed to be jeff clark though was he? did i miss that completely?

If it was about Jay M, then his mentor was not Jeff Clark. I have just read The Big Drop (again) which in one chapter captures Jay's preparation for Maverics and his first session, including the wipeout that made the cover of surfer and his name perhaps (IIRC). Was a good read on paper.

As a lover of shit films, I have to see this. Surf Nazis Must Die looks positively classy in comparison.
