Brazil in january

Hi there,
New here. But thinking of heading to Brazil in january for 3 weeks. How is the surf at that time? I hear some mixed messages. Some say it's crap, some say it's ok.
FYI; I'm used to Dutch conditions, which are, well, not that fantastic.

And while I'm here. Any tips about places to go if you want to leave the big city of Rio behind?

It is not a great time to go to be honest. Unless you go to Fernando do Noronha which is amazing and uncrowded but very expensive. Florianopolis is the surf capital of Brazil. if you are going to Rio then check Prainha (day trip from Rio) and Saquarema (place to go for couple of days).

Other spots like Itacare, Paracuru, Ubatuba and Pipa will have some sort of surf but its the wrong time of year unless going to FN.

I would recommend going to Ecuador and checking Ayampe instead.
