The "good film" review thread!

Postby Black » Tue Dec 25, 2012 11:22 pm

So there was nothing too interesting on telly today and we decided to watch "The Reader" purchased for a quid somewhere. I had no idea what it was about or what to expect. Thought it was easily the best film I've seen in a while, pretty much spot on throughout and makes your average entertainment film a poor shadow of the medium. Lots of things to think about, reminded me a bit of Bad Timing with Art Garfunkel which I also thought about. Worth watching, maybe pulled a punch in the name of taste.

Rather than watch Dad's Army, Morecambe and Wise, Lord of the Rings et al over the last two nights we have watched the original 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and the sequel 'The Girl who Played with Fire'........

Both in Swedish with subs, both quite long and both very very good. Good plot with the expected twists and turns. I am really getting into foreign language films, you have to concentrate which helps to keep you awake....

This just leaves us with the final film in the Stieg Larsson trilogy 'The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest' which we will watch tonight unless we are drawn innexplicable towards Dad's Army, Superstars, Mamma Mia or The lord of the Rings.................doubtful.

I thank you..........M Kermode......... 8)

 me and Defoe go way back, good man!

I watched George A. Romeros "Survival of the dead" a few days ago, what a load of rubbish, I cant believe how down hill the dead series of films have gone.

Heres some more good films for you to look out for though...
City of god - subtitled film set in Rio - v.good.
Menace to society.
Tango and cash - classic.
Young guns 1 & 2.
Platoon - just incase you havent seen it yet. my all time favourite with an all star cast including a rather young Defoe.

Platoon is god. What a film. Young heads take note.

La Haine was an old French fav of mine.

Tucker and Dale V's Evil is the funniest film I've seen in ages. And I hate teen slasher movies. Watch it, but wear some incontinence pants if you do.

I liked Ted. Even if it was a bit strange in parts.

The Other Guys with Marky Mark in too and Will Ferrel is funny.

Watched Your Highness the other night too. 'Kin hillarious... 'Let the fuckening begin', & 'if your vagina is anything like my hand then it will work just fine'. Fuckening is my new word now.

Old Boy is sick. In both senses of the word. The Japs are one twisted lot when it comes to film making.

I think the film quality has definetly gotten worse as the series goes on. All the new ones are ok but survival of the dead is shockingly bad, dont waste your time with it, its the only film ive ever bought which I turned off half way through.

Apocalypse now
Fear and loathing in las vegas
Battle royal 1 & 2 - japanese subtitled films both worth a watch!
Slamming salmon - Possibly the funniest film you will ever see.

Great thread this one - Few to add in to the mix here...

Kenny - great fly on the wall movie of a portaloo maintenance guy - great character - heres the trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=xfPpTeR_760

The wicker man - go for the original with Edward Woodwood - ignore the remake - why remake something thats so classic? same with the italian job

Fargo - Probably my fave Coen Brother movie

Quadrophenia - have to add this one as its one I and thousands have watched many many times since I first watched it in my early teens

All the best for 2013 everyone

Can vouch for city of God too.

If we're doing oldies. The original Time Machine and original Day The Earth Stood Still. I can watch that anything and still enjoy it. Top sci-fi for 1953.

Yh i think it has gone downhill since the remake of dawn of the dead. Think Romero is putting his name to stuff but the actual filmmakers themselves arent the same quality.

Snyder who made the new dawn of the dead also did The Watchmen that i thought was quality too.
I also enjoyed the battle royal films thought the hunger games was just a tamer version of it but i enjoyed that too.
The clash and the wrath of the titans flms i quite enjoyed as well as the immortals is of a similar ilk.
As for comedy you cant really look further than most Will ferrel films and also enjoyed Superbad.
Sourcecode i thought looked crap and my mate suggested watching it and that was surprisingly good and The Social Network was interesting even if your not that into facebook.

What more do you want me to say? :? It's got Guy Pierce in it, but he only plays a fairly minor part(with a bad moustache). All the other actors are very good, the lad who plays the main role is excellent.
