Interesting to watch. And no doubt that would be fun for a few sessions. That beachy looked poor for "normal" surfing- i would have probably passed and went onto somewhere better...no reefs round your parts?

It is the best bank on that part of the coast at present,except in an onshore and most of the crew turn out for it.

There are two spots in the last few videos though, Omanu and the Main Beach.

I think it's fair to suggest the physical size of the board aids its wave catching compared to a standard Malibu. Please don't say it doesn't... That would be utterly idiotic.

Why would anyone dispute it, obviously I make the board that size for a reason.

It's idiotic to suggest that I might think otherwise.

Size is only part of the equation though... and what do you mean by size? Length? Width? Thickness? Weight? .... only the length and weight are unusually large, width and thickness are not. Excluding the fin that is.

Most boards over 12 feet are complete dogs, because shapers don't really know what makes longer surfboards tick.

One of the design factors which I didn't mention is the rocker. The length allows an exceptionally low rocker.

It was a lot earlier than that, he took off only moments after I did, his track isn't visible though until he comes into the frame as I catch him up. Not that it makes much difference, even the track which is visible shows how quickly I catch him up.

By the way Danny, I rode short boards for 24 years, including several years full time at an epic and consistent point break, and have to say that riding big boards like the Dragon is much more rewarding. It's a blast to have a much wider range of rideable conditions, and in average beach break waves one can link up all sorts of sections, it's nice to hit the shorebreak with some speed on too. When one does get a bit of a tube it's a major blast on such a long heavy machine, it kind of 'ups the ante'.

Seems a bit strange that 38 surfers couldnt catch any of those waves ,they look slow and fat but any decent longboard shouldn't have trouble catching them.

Strange? It's quite normal actually, and it's also normal for others to assume that they can partake when in fact they can not, so it is not surprising that you are mistaken.

In fact it was 15 second period swell so although the waves on the blowhole were barely breaking until they hit the inside section they were quite fast in terms of wave front speed, this helps a lot for unbroken swell riding.

Maybe it was 38 beginners?

I'm sorry to disappoint you on that score but they were not.

Maybe the experienced crew were across at Matakana get some nice barrels.?

Take my advice and stop making a fool of yourself. the wind was in the East South East and both the coast and Matakana were a mess... no one even ventured out at either break and the Main Beach was the only place to be as everyone knew, since it is sheltered from that quarter. In fact the wind bent around 'Rabbit Island' into a light offshore, which was a bonus.

Just a photo op that one, there was no exit which is why I took a low line.

That particular board is very nice in the tube, has a good turn of speed too.

Swell for tomorrow and the next day cyclone Freda ... got to go and make wax now.

Would like a go def

Would like to see it on a wave with better quality- ie steeper hollower... And a bit more hectic- I ca imagine getting in early and deep on a slab and getting some good barrels

Cyclone Freda waves yesterday, in 30 knot offshores. It was massive in the morning but closing out the beach at low tide, by high tide only the corner was working, 40 surfers out, none of whom made any waves at all, and I had to do a rescue.

Yes, I have a cousin who lives there. She has no interest in the surf other than as a spectacle, but as its the area were moving to has been mailing a lot back and forth. And only last week mentioned how amazing all the surfers were.

Still, none of them catch a wave.

I'm glad to hear that you are still moving to the Tauranga area and I'm sure that you'll enjoy it.

I missed that day in the pic and went the next day as it was supposed to be bigger, but wasn't. The crew reported that they got good waves and a few tubes as well, I got lesser conditions but it didn't matter too much.
