Out of interest mealy. What lens was used for the second pic. Going to gues either a 50mm or 70-200.

If that's where I think it is that wave can dole out some merciless beatings

I left it to the experts that day as it was coming through bigger than my photos suggest. I have been thoroghly beaten before there..hounded out of the ocean to somewhere more forgiving :).

Vincy boy, if you keep doing what you are doing you will be surfing this wave in the next year or so, or ones like it, don't worry about that. :)

For ref danny it is one of the smaller sisters of the wave you are thinking off. I was going to walk round to that one for some pics but was gagging to get back in.

haaha - exactly what I was thinking Black! Fun looking wave until you stack it and end up with a fierce beating in the grinding white-wash - looks like it would pummel you right in over the reef

the lad made the drop, was a very decent surfer actually.

This chap wasn't so lucky, you can see his board behind the curtain.

Yes you do not want to get caught inside. I got caught in the wrong spot and punished trying to surf here a couple of years ago.
You can just see JohnJohn here about to really suffer that same day

Incidently if anyone thinks these photo's are above what is acceptable then please let me know and I will remove them. I have never put pics on MSW before.

Despite me being in one of them, these waves are probably out of my ability, especially with a crowd present. Hence I am holding the camersa :)

Look forward to meeting you one day Vince, also waiting for a decent swell.

I went for a budget SLR set up as we wanted to be able to get decent photos of the kids rather than pay £££ for studio pics.

I have a Nikon D3000 (plus std VR lens) which was last year’s module so I only paid £299 for it new from Amazon – the new D3100 is 399 btw.
The pictures were taken using a £100 Tameron zoom lens from Jessops. So all in 400 plus a bag and card.
The Tameron has no vr so I should probably sort out a cheap tripod off ebay, the Nikon lens was with VR was £200 so I may try and get a used one at some point.

Still learning to use the thing really.

Sounds good. Get a fat card and fire off as many pics as possible. How long is the lens? In decent light you should be OK without a tripod unless it's really low light, at which point photos get poor anyway. I think VR is overrated, just choose the right shutter speed / f stop combo and up the ISO if needed.
