Fishy stuff

Any discussion on shaping, designing, repairing and riding surfcraft of any type or shape. Also a good place to ask the 'what board should I buy?' question.

Please people of the world, let there always be enough fish in the waters.

Twin fin and a swallow tail- that makes it a fish right?

If it's a butt tail, is it also then a 1+1 set-up? :-D

The only reason I can see that shaped into the tail is to free it up more in turns/looser? So why not reduce the fin base and still keep it a rounded pin?

NPJ 1+ ! Arsetail- I like that!

The board's coming to a friend of mine Butthole, so I'll get a report on how it rides. Neal knows his onions with these boards, he's been focused on the Duos for a couple of years so I imagine there's a good reason for it. Here's a proper fish though- Mackie sidecuts....

Butthole- the Mackies are super nice, I just took possession of the 6'5" Mick made himself while he was up here shaping and it's insanely good- total rocket when there's some wave but still a lot of fun in he little mushy stuff that's mostly what I get to surf. Jeff at Nine Lights made me this cutaway quad set and it's staying in the board- don't feel any urge to experiment! The Duos are great, you'll be happy when you get it into the water- bit of Single, bit of twin but not really either of them. First box for the US just arrived and there's a batch more coming- well pleased.....

Helping a friend out and remembered this thread.

Gauging interest in a 5' 11" Dick Van Strallen Carbon Fish Rastovitch Model, or can someone give an idea of a reasonable asking price please?

Looks like a Dick custom rather than the Aviso version that Fluid Concept have their site. Theoretically, this would make it an even rarer beast, but I find that there is often a ceiling on price for used boards (that are not in the vintage or historical categories) and/or you may have to wait for the right buyer... Difficult to price up TBH

Thank you

Looking at the carbon weave and the somewhat industrial style finish that Dick has used and the goretex valve its an older board. I can ring Dick after the weekend and quizz him what years he used that cross check weave used on the deck.
Looks like my old magic carbon rocket fish so quite rare really. Mine was a super early one that had a small centre keel glassed on as well as it was made while Dick and Rasta were dialling in the fin set up.
I bought my probably 7-8 years ago for $600 and it was in perfect condition. Had the same industrial look finish but with the finer weave on both top and bottom with painted rails.
More recently he went to really sweet looking gloss finishes on the carbon boards and with a different eps weight in the blanks.
That one feel pretty light?
I recently bought a used 6'9" full carbon shortboard from the same era in fantastic condition for $300 in a surf shop on the Gold coast that sells lots of new DVS boards.
5th board in from the left.
Image
Ultimately I say hang onto it as Dick will eventually hang up the planer and he's about to turn 74. That board will be a collectors item.
All things considered its in the UK not Australia so your mate can ask a pretty decent price for it.
The shop next door in Manly Sydney have had this 6'5" carbon twin keel on Gumtree for a couple of months for $650 with no takers.
Just checked and I notice its gone now though.
There's a tasty looking carbon reef runner if you scroll down in the link.
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-surfing/dic ... n/k0c18568
Just bought this 6' wasp which is getting a good workout as we are going into our 2nd week of cyclone swell right now.
I will more than likely order one of these in full carbon/eps as soon as I have the money. It's that good.

I was hanging at Suffolk park just South of Byron last week and walked down to Broken head to see what the waves were doing in the late arvo. Sitting on the sand a ways up from the main break a dude came walking off the track with a 6 person entourage including video and stills guy trailing him.
He had a short, wide keel fish that looked strangely familiar.
Proceeded to paddle right out the front of me and go town on the crappy little rip bowl waves being thrown up by the high tide.
Every so often he would come in to consult with the crew.
The board also had an incut about 1 foot ahead of the keels and and pulled in section after the fins.
Got a good look at the board as sometimes he was only a few metres away from me.
Eventually I twigged it was Ozzie and probably the same board from the above clip.
He was surfing sans leggie and never lost that board once.
The speed he got off the mark on that board was very impressive.

haha nice one, i think they called that one the 'liquorice allsort'.

i'm in the mood for a new summer board and that sidecut idea is in the mix for it with some other refinements from my last little magic yellow thing.

Thanks all for the comments on the DVS, it's on ebay so we'll see how it goes, though would rather sell it here.

Off to Gulfstream to pick up my custom keel fish otherwise would of had it off my mate myself.

Be interesting to see what it goes for.
I was talking to Dick today but completely forgot to ask him about the time span he was doing that particular carbon cloth in.
Too immersed in chat about carbon wasps.

Only had chance to take it for two quick surf in ankle slappers but it paddles so nicely I know, as always, it's going to be a good one. :-)

Cropped on forum, but link to full size.

Beautiful looking board. What's the full dims? And do you know what rocker template? I love Bros "semi-fish" rocker.

That template is basically what I have been 'just about' to order for months now while convincing myself I need a new HPSB and then not ordering either.

If you don't gel with it... PM?

OK, thank Pterodroma.

I'm not sure on the rocker but it will be pretty damn flat being that it paddled my fat backside into a tiny wave when testing it.

hahah, I'll keep you in mind if I ever sell it but this one's a keeper. :-) Look forward to seeing what you eventually end up ordering.
