Board size?

Hi guys,

I'm guessing there are hundreds of posts about this and it gets rather tedious, sorry if thats the case.

Just looking to start surfing, renting a board this weekend and if I get on with it I wanna buy a board as renting everytime is soon going to outweigh the price of getting a cheap board.

I am about 105+ kgs or 230+lb. I've been looking at a couple of 7'6"-7'8" boards on ebay. Is that long enough for me?

Also, would a 3 fin or single fin be better for me?

Don't know if it matters but the spots that are local to me are bantham, bude, newquay, whitsands etc. Other than ebay, where else can I pick up a cheap board that I can learn to start on near Plymouth?

You are fine mate, this is the learn to surf forum so all beginner questions are welcome! I am 6'2 and 100kgs, but have been surfing for quite some time so am down to a 6'0 now (among others!).
Starting out on something between 7-8 ft will be just great for you, go for something second hand and a bit cheap first off, until you really know if you have the bug for it. Then look for something a bit better as going straight in for something out of your ability level will just hold you back. Don't be afraid to get a big ol tanker! Some of the BIC and NSP models can be ok but you should progress off of them quite quickly, I wouldn't worry about one three or five fins right now, get something with either a thruster set up or a 2+1 which means one big centre fin and two side fins that you can either use smaller ones or just go for a straight three fin thruster set up.

It's about fun, not looking cool so go for function over form until you are good enough to try the cool bit

Got a Bic 8ft 4" for sale. Great learner board as it has loads of float, nice and easy to ride and is bullet proof. £150 for board, bag, leash and fins. Ready to go! Board is in great condition with no dings, fins are all clean etc.

Hi guys,

Completely forgot to check back. Was very rough down newquay, lots of white water. Struggled to stand up, completely forgot my technique since I last went (4 years ago!). Got it worked out now so should be standing up next session hopefully.

At least I know I'm looking at the right thing.

Dan where abouts are you? There's a board local to me that I like the look of but if that falls through I'll give you a shout. Didn't want to spend over £100 on my first board ideally as I'll be getting rid sharpish (hopefully). Trying to sell my bike so if I can flog that I'll give you a shout.

Oh and I'm over 6ft and a 'rugby' build, I'm not that fat At least I'm buoyant hahah!

In Nottingham mate but could be persuaded to deliver if your near the sea and the waves are on.

If your a big lad this would suit you down to the ground. Loads of float snd really stable.

Bought a Bic 7'9" board now, came with a new leash and fins £80, can't moan at that! Cheers for the help guys. Let hope it stays afloat with me on it

Been out a few times on this board now and getting the feeling I may be a bit too heavy for it! Looked on bic's website and according to their ideal specs, I am about 3 stone too heavy!! I am catching waves but after about 3 seconds of standing up I've stopped and have to bail. If there aren't big waves, I feel as though the board isn't going to push me.

If I sell my board and get something a bit longer and get used to that, when I downsize, what am I going to go for? As proven, this length is too light or do normal boards (as in not plastic, so proper fibreglass or whatever they are) float more for their size than plastic ones.

I'm aiming to lose weight anyway, starting to get a good solid diet on track and starting gym from payday but I am a large build anyway!

ps. Dan do you still have that board?
