Used to skate a little, body boarded as a kid...but long had the urge to surf. Now it's deep. Am based in NW Scotland and am looking for a teacher or guide to take me through the ropes. MSW has been informative so far and hope the tone here is a standard for the community in the UK.

hello people,i'm dean and living in north cornwall,i have surfed on and mostly off for the last couple of years but this year i have really got into it and try and go in most nights
i have been using a softboard since i started but that has now fallen apart, so then i bought a 7'10 nsp mini mal from my local shop (the pit,st.merryn),its an ex hire board so abit beaten up but good and easier to learn on.
i'm hoping to get in a lot more and maybe through the winter  so i have ordered a take off 8' mini mal which will be my board for a while

i mostly go in at harlyn or maybe polzeath if i'm desperate

might see some of you in the water somewhere

This website is amazing, but just wonder why there are so many beaches missing (especially in Astruias).

Sounds like you stepped down to a smaller board too quick and go surf saltburn instead of Cayton...its a more forgiving wave and you wont get get in the way as much kook...ha ha ha....

One half of my family comes from stoke, they used to work in the potteries, that should give an indication as to how long ago that was! Never been myself though.

Alrighty guys!

Name's MelonBalls, I'm from the northwest of Ireland (Donegal to be precise). I got a couple of lessons around a 10 months ago on a big ol' cheeseboard and since then I've had the zombie gaze for the waves.

Bought an 8ft epoxy mini mal six months ago, riding the line on the 3-4footers. Trying to work on my left hand turns/waves and just spending as much time as I can in the water. Also trying to build up my stamina/endurance for paddling cause I find I'm usually pretty wrecked with regards to paddling if I'm going out for a second session of the day.

I thought I'd join this forum cause it's always good to have a wide array of experienced folk to pester with my petty quibs!!

I'm eager to progress but I'm going to give it another wee while till I get a second board, which I'll probably get shaped locally.

Keep her lit!!!

Just had an awesome couple of days surfing on the south coast, the surf has been pretty crap but just love being in the water sat around for like 2 hours yesterday just to catch the one riderable wave but still loved it and thats what it's all about!! yeah! live nr wycombe so if any other surfers round there give me a shout as the misses seems to be losing interest in surfing quickly and my surf days may be numbered :?

My name is Brian, I'm 25 years old and moved to Santa Cruz, California, USA last year for graduate school. I figured that if I didn't learn to surf while I was here I'd be doing myself a terrible injustice, so when I finally had the funds to afford the equipment I decided to take a lesson and see if I liked it. My first lesson was about a week ago, and immediately after the lesson I bought myself a wetsuit and Verner 7'8" hybrid board :D. Now I find myself checking the surf report multiple times a day (checking the cams to see if any waves are in), and hoping that tomorrow will bring better conditions (its been terribly flat here for the past week or two, and conditions don't appear to be getting better in the immediate future).

Looking forward to the day that I can really appreciate the breaks around here (they're world class I hear), and always looking for people to paddle out with (so if you're in the area, or even visiting drop me a line).

I'm Amy, living in bristol and been surfing for a year now. AM LOVING IT!!!! Normally head down to Saunton/Puts every weekend.
Am going to move to North Devon as soon as possible but finiding a place to live down there that isn't in Barnstaple or Ilfracombe is proving problematic! Ideally I want to live in Braunton. Anyone wanna house share?
Am using an old 80's 6ft 6 board that a friend of mine very kindly gave to me, it's been a steep learning curve and I kinda feel that I'm stuck at a certain level and could use a few lessons to get any better.
I've had dreams about catching my first barrel, it will happen one day! I need to move so I can get in the water every day! Surfing has kinda taken over my life, I think my mates are sick of me talking about nothing else, so hear I am 8)

Hey, im new to this board so thought id introduce my self.
20year old female living in south England. been bodyboarding for as long as i can remember but recently got into surfing (since last summer). Managed to get out all of 3 times, but so nearly got standing last time... so nearly its annoying. Dont get to go much as i have one friend who surfs and im a bit social phobic so cant go by myself :( and the waves here have sucked when i could have gone (and my friend refuses to go if the report says anything less and 3-4ft)
I have a 7'2" minimal. Would like to meet more people into surfing, and chat to people about it. i havent had the chance to surf much but i already love it :-D

Hi - I am Thomas, about 38 years old and Norwegian. I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil and figured out I should learn to surf since skiing conditions are kind of marginal here. I am a really bad surfer but love it anyway. I am a geologist, specialised in sediments by training and enjoy and awesome master in theory/poor in practice ratio when it comes to beach breaks and shifting sands - it just doesnt help anything at all :-D
I currently own 2 longboards (one that challenges me and one that gives me confidence) and a fat old fish that I almost never use except when I go surfing in my garden.
RJ is an awesome place to live and work. In the weekends I am usually found gasping for air off some of the zona oeste beaches, if I am not sitting at the sand grumbling about the waves being just too much work to paddle out in or to scary if they throw me over the falls. Macumba is my favourite place, if the waves are there and the crowd is gone. Since that does not ususally happen I either stay there anyway, Maracana de surfe is still Maracana and that means spectacular after all(cost so far, 2 pierced boards, one cut wetsuit and a few bruises and minor cuts on my body as well). Days of lesser craziness I drive to some other beach, I have my favourites ;-)

Ye man !! only bin surfin since march this year. Went Sri Lanca a few year ago to my dads guest house and attempted to surf at welligamma but didnt have a chance as the only boards they had to hire were left over ones after the tsunami. They were short and knackered. Couldnt stand up at all.

Doin alright now though progressed from hire boards to NSP 7"10 and now on a Bunty 7"5 and i am lovin it. I can stand up no probs and can turn a bit. i am now on green waves but still a way to go to be up there with the rest.

Did my cruishia ligament at Constantine Bank Holiday August and just recently, i think sunday just gone did my eardrum. Only a small hole in drum but still deaf in 1 ear for a bit. Doc said to stay out of the surf for 2 week but just had to go Harlyn yesterday. Made sure my ear was water tight bought a hood to so earplugs and bluetac didnt come out.

Love snowboardin aswell goin at end of jan 2010, gonna be 14 of us so will be epic. If anyone got a surf shop or hotel near to any of the beaches, i do cctv, etc so if anyone has ever thought about decent surf cams like Harlyns ( which is the best there is) give us a shout !!! Harlyns cam is great but the others arnt the best and also watergate hasnt been on for ages ???

And yeh dean will keep an eye out for yor NSP 7"10 in the water mite see ya at polzeath, harlyn .
Wot colour yer board ??

Hi, I am Pav currently living in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Full time musician (guitarist) with passion for board sports for as long as I can remember. I was quite good skater, and did some flatland BMX. Last year I started skimboarding which is super fun and that led me to surfing.
I've got:
Exile Carbon Skimboard (brown)
Paul Callahan 6'8 shortboard (white, beaten up and with three different fins - blue, black and red hahaha)

I can skim quite well but I went surfing only couple of times at Longsands. I have managed to pop up and ride for like 3 seconds :) and now just trying to improve.
Are there any skimboarders on MSW?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so thought I'd do this bit!

I've been surfing for about 7 years on and off. Only really got in to it over the last 3 or so years (although my ability would suggest a few weeks!). I'm not a natural surfer but love it and am hooked.

Not sure what type of board I am best on......

As for boards I've got:

9ft hobie (which I'm selling)
9'2" Phil Clifford
6'10" Hawaiian Soul
6ft gul stream

Local break is Whitsand Bay.

Best performance was the weekend just gone where I managed to get in to a barrel for all of 2 seconds! Firdt time ever.
