Radioactive mud/ Bristol Channel?

Postby Chris152 » Wed Sep 12, 2018 7:37 am

They've starting dumping over 300,000 tonnes of mud from Hinkley nuclear power station to a point in the channel off Penarth. Presumably any radioactive material will be washing up and down the channel.
Any thoughts on how safe this'll be in the long term? I'm too old to worry too much but my teenage son wants to surf this evening, can't say I feel totally comfortable about it.

I share your concerns Chris, it's an unknown, long term problem.

I was surfing Sandside many years ago in sight of Dounreay and got smashed onto the reef protecting my head. A large gash on the back of my hand took a long time to heal and I always wonder what may have got in there.

Thanks Philshoz - as you say, who knows the potential consequences and when they might kick in? I've really no idea but have enough doubt to stay out of the water til things are clearer.

Here's a 38 Degrees petition that outlines some of the questions:

Well, that'd be one option but I was thinking more about the info on what's being dumped/ the effects of the dumping are!
