First board - Mini-mal or Fish?

Postby BadgerPatrol » Mon May 28, 2012 9:51 am

A friend of mine has just started surfing and has asked me for advice on his first board. He's a little over 14st and about 5'10" and is a pretty strong paddler.

My first thought was that he should do what most people would and get a nice, big, custom mini-mal - probably about 7'10" / 22".

But .... someone has recommended that he gets a 6'2" fish instead. I've heard it said before that it's easier to learn on a egg shaped fishtail board but I've never known anyone that actually followed that route.

Bearing in mind that he's learning in the UK - what does everyone think about this?

mini malibu gonna be funnier than taking off over a fast fish, but I think fish are nice as a second step.
